So many good Fleetwood Mac songs, right? We're not done yet!
Released as the first single from the Mirage album in 1982, this is one of Fleetwood Mac's biggest hits, and yet it is often forgotten when discussing their best songs. And, indeed, the band was a mirage at the time. Notice how very little they are on screen together during this video. That's because none of them were getting along. At all. Stevie Nicks was broken up with TWO of her bandmates, neither of whom were really fond of her. Neither was the video producer, who complained about her diva behavior. John McVie was largely drunk throughout the shoot, and Christine McVie was just sick of all the drama.... which didn't endear her to her bandmates, either.
Did you get all that? I had to draw it all out. But the Magrite-inspired video that ensured from the chaotic drama sure turned out pretty, and the song itself is a sweet Christine McVie-Lindsey Buckingham duet, written by McVie.

17 January 2018 - Fleetwood Mac - Landslide
This is perhaps one of Fleetwood Mac's most recognized songs. Written by Stevie Nicks before she and Lindsey Buckingham joined Fleetwood Mac, it's really a collaboration between both of them and an extension of the Buckingham Nicks project they did prior to joining the band. The story goes that the two of them were recording their second album together in the same studio that Fleetwood Mac was recording in during the winter of 1974-1975. The band heard them and asked them to join, an offer that the commercially unsuccessful duo could not refuse.
This song ended up on the band's 1975 self-titled album, an album getting a reissue this Friday, January 19th, 2017. "Landslide" was a song about the uncertainty of Nicks's life after the failure of the first Buckingham Nicks album - she was at a crossroads as to whether or not she was going to continue a career in music, her world figuratively crashing around her. It wasn't a hit song at the time, but did get some radio play as a popular tune, and did eventually chart in a live version in 1998.
The song itself is sparse yet hauntingly beautiful, with little accompaniment besides a guitar.

16 January 2018 - Fleetwood Mac - Don't Stop
Yesterday, we featured a Christine McVie-penned song about a woman struggling in her marriage Here, we have another Christine McVie-penned song, written after the marriage crumbled and her search for hope for the future which struggling with the depression of the lost relationship. From the classic 1997 album Rumors, this song was sung by Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie, and is genuinely filled with such hope that it has become an anthem for sunny outlooks.
This particular song was a big enough deal to get the band together on stage after a decade of acrimony - they recorded some together, but never toured or performed completely - at President Clinton's inaugural celebration. And it's a great performance!

This is one of Fleetwood Mac's best known songs, and as one with a Christine McVie lead vocal (she wrote the song as well), you know there's a story.
Christine was married to John McVie, the bassist (and frankly the Mac) in the band. In 1975, their marriage was on the rocks, and she was feeling troubled. So she wrote a very happy-sounding, sweet-sounding song that was basically begging her husband to tell her that he loved her.
Which might be why she absolutely doesn't look like she's having fun performing the song.
The song didn't work. They divorced in 1976. Nevertheless, she stayed with the band until 1998.... their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. She still didn't look like she enjoyed performing the song (although Lindsey Buckingham sure was enjoying the banjo). One other noteworthy aspect of this performance: John McVie is singing backup vocals.
Christine rejoined the band in 2014. She finally looks like she enjoys her cheerful little ditty.

29 December 2017 - Transvision Vamp - Baby I Don't Care
Yesterday, readers of Totally Covered were witness to a cover by an artist most of them had never heard of, of a song most of them had never heard of. I can't fix that first part. But I can fix the 2nd.
Transvision Vamp are a band that was a relative reliable hitmaker for a few years in the UK. Their only US hit was not this song, but a cover of a Holly and the Italians song. This song, their biggest UK hit, was the lead single and opening track off their 2nd album, Velveteen, one of my favorites of all time - strongly recommended.
The song itself is pretty standard pop. However, the combination of a band that has serious chops and a deep pedigree, with ties to bands as diverse as X-Ray Spex and Bush, and a dynamic lead singer that was not only not fearful of the spotlight, but embraced it, makes the song memorable.
Wendy James went on to a semi-successful solo career after the band broke up in 1992. This is one of their last performances. Incidentally, I would love to start a campaign to get them to reform, like The Darling Buds (for which we take far too much credit) and The Primitives (I discuss the unfair comparisons between TV and these two bands in that post) did.

28 December 2017 - Sia - Cheap Thrills (with and without Sean Paul)
Do you remember that time that Sia was on American Bandstand?
....but the official video - which actually has Sia in it!!!!!!! - features a Maddie Ziegler-centered dance performance - and Sia!!!!!! Facing forward!!!!!! - and deserves attention. Since, you know, the song is about dancing. Without Sean Paul, it is, in my opinion, a better song, but either way, it's catchy.

27 December 2017 - Kesha ft. The Dap-Kings - Woman
I know that we've been kind of slow posting things on here. But this lateness is inexcusable - after hers was the best motherf***ing show I saw in 2016! - and I am going to fix that motherf***ing s**t right now.
Kesha's comeback this year was perhaps the best motherf***ing story in music in 2017. Her 2nd single post-comeback - this empowerment anthem made more poignant by her motherf***ing legal troubles with Sony Music concerning the alleged sexual assault of her by Dr. Luke - is a hell of a "I'm back, you motherf***ing bitches" song. At any rate, it's clear that she's not going to be f***ing pushed down.
What is missing from this song that was present in her earlier songs is Auto-Tune. Because the woman the pipes and doesn't need motherf***ing Auto-Tune. (Which, if you read Totally Covered, you already know). Any doubt about that fact should be squashed by the fact that she's keeping up with The Motherf***ing Dap-Kings, who are better known for being the backing band for the late big-piped singers Sharon Motherf***ing Jones and Amy Motherf***ing Winehouse.
And this song has spirit. Ignoring for the motherf***ing overuse of "motherf***er" in the song. Kesha starts laughing at about 1:13 in this video. The song is free and fun, intentionally. In the artist's words:

15 December 2017 - The Smithereens - Blood and Roses
On Tuesday of this week, the lead vocalist of the band the Smithereens, Pat DiNizio, died. It was tragic, and he was gone far too soon.
In tribute, I wanted to share one of my favorite songs by the Smithereens. If you've seen the movie Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion, you've heard this song, which was their first single from their first full-length album (Especially for You, from 1986, which I cannot recommend enough!).
I was hooked on the band from the opening bassline in this song. Lyrically, it's subtle but still heart-felt and poignant. Overall, it's just a well-written and compelling song.
Perhaps one of the most striking things about this song is, although it was clearly written by DiNizio to be heavily bassline-focused, it translates well to an acoustic performance, such as this solo performance by him from 2009.
It's songwriting like this that will be missed. Farewell to a great songwriter, who left behind some great material.

As many of you know, I am a very big fan of Glen Campbell. So I am sad about his passing. He was a fine musician, a fine songwriter.
I know the man had his demons, especially his well-publicized drug-fueled romance with Tanya Tucker. Since the mid-80s, when he married his wife, Kim, these (as well as the substance abuse) seem to have been behind him, thankfully. By all accounts, he was a wonderful husband and father to his three children with Kim.
So why did I choose "Galveston", a song he didn't write, or even originally perform (Don Ho!) as the song to pay tribute? It speaks to his strong, emotive voice, and his creative storytelling. Glen Campbell did make a lyrical change in the 2nd verse to make it his own. It's a truly beautiful song, and a fitting tribute.

I'm willing to bet you didn't know what this song was called. I admit that I didn't. I had to look it up.
Booker T. and the M.G.'s are members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That's largely due to this song. You might be surprised to learn that they were largely a backup band for just about every musical artist that came through Stax Records in Memphis. MG, in fact, stands for Memphis Group.
I want you to soak in this Memphis soul sound. It's a little jazzy, but also groovy.

The theme from Twin Peaks.
You know Twin Peaks is now back, on Showtime.
You might know the song, and most of the rest of the haunting soundtrack, was written and performed by Angelo Badalamenti.
You might not know that the theme song has lyrics, and that Julee Cruise, Badalamenti's muse at the time, did the singing. You might recognize her as the roadhouse singer on Twin Peaks (she will be reprising the role in the revival).
The song itself, with lyrics, is haunting and somewhat sad. And Cruise delivers it flawlessly, with a tremendous vocal range.
Of course, when you sing such an iconic song, you have to sing it again....
....and again....
...and again. Oops. Sorry. This is an appearance she made with the B-52s when she stood in for Cindy Wilson.

Darling Buds Day is on Saturday this year. So I'm observing it a day early, but it is taking a lot of restraint to wait THAT long. With one pause, we've been doing Darling Buds Day on this blog every year. It started accidentally. And, famously, I begged Andrea Lewis, their lead vocalist, to stay together last year after they did a few reunion shows.

If you know me even a little bit, chances are I've tried to get you to watch the television show The Americans. For those unaware of this show (currently in its fifth season, Tuesdays at 10pm on FX), it stars the long-underrated Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys as a couple living in Northern Virginia who happen to be Soviet spies in the early 1980's.

Visually, I am a fan of one-take videos, and this is one of them. It's more impressive that Kiesza is doing all this dancing and moving and the manhandling she gets at 3:40... with a very recently broken rib. When she's hailing that cab at the end of the video, she is GENUINELY exhausted.
But this isn't strictly a video blog. It's a blog about musical pleasure, and this song delivers. It's a bright, emotional throwback to a sound not heard in 20 years - something not entirely out of place in a dance club in 1993. A tribute to a simpler time, it doesn't have a letdown throughout. Enjoy this treasure, because music like this isn't common anymore.

I wasn't sure how to handle this song. It's damn near one of my favorite songs of all time.
So I thought I'd handle it in chronological order.
Lush released an EP called Mad Love in early 1990. It was never released in the US, although this song was released to US radio, and its UK video was released and shown on MTV. Note that it is a very low-fi affair, and that's just charming.
Fast forward to late 1990, which is the difference between high school Tony and college Tony. 4AD Records got smart, compiled all those British EPs by Lush into a full album, and released them to the US and Japan. Called Gala, it wasn't a huge hit, but was well-received.
And with it came a re-release of De-Luxe and a much higher fidelity video. Because, let's face it, you get a much better look at Miki Berenyi in this video, and US labels sell the pretty girl a lot more. Still, it's a visually interesting video.

Sorry. I get a little excited about things like this. I've literally been waiting for four years! But with such a thoughtful artist, who has also been hanging out with Taylor Swift (which, to be honest, shows in this video), doing music for the Hunger Games movies, and collaborating with many artists, it stands to reason that we'd be waiting.
And it's a thoughtful, emotional song - perhaps the most complex one of hers to date - co-written by her and Jack Antonoff (of fun.). I'm not going to put any more glowing words around this. Just listen and enjoy it.

23 December 2016 - The Chainsmokers ft. ROZES - Roses
2016 was The Chainsmokers' year. This was the first big hit of 2016 for this DJ duo. It only seemed fitting that we'd feature them for our last post before Christmas.
Written by Elizabeth Roze Mencel, she also provided vocals to the song. Yes, ROZES is actually a person. She's also a pretty solid songwriter, and the pride of Mongomeryville, PA. Enjoy!

This was supposed to be The Breeders.
But Kim Deal decided to do things a little differently. She put The Breeders on hiatus for a year - mostly because her sister Kelley was in rehab and Jo Wiggs was off doing other things - and called herself Tammy Ampersand.
And made a brilliant album.
And then got tired of waiting and reformed the Breeders without her mates... or rather, renamed the Amps to the Breeders.
But we still have that one Amps album.

Some songs and sounds stick with you forever, and you never get sick of them. This, for me, is one of those songs.
Mazzy Star were (still are, in fact) a duo - Hope Sandoval and David Roback (ex-Rain Parade) - who started off together in a band called Opal, with Kendra Smith (ex-Dream Syndicate) as lead vocalist. When Smith left, abruptly - like, slammed her guitar on the ground during a gig and left - Sandoval took over lead vocals to finish the tour.
After that tour ended, the two of them formed Mazzy Star. Mazzy Star had a minor hit song in 1993 - "Fade Into You". This is not that song. This song is from their influential and tone-setting 1990 debut album, She Hangs Brightly. Kurt Cobain called the album one of his favorites of all time.

8 September 2016 - Dolly Parton - Jolene
You know, now that Scott Colvin doesn't write for this blog, we have a lot less country. (Yes, I know - I posted this last week. That was the first country I had posted in a year, at least.)
Over the next several weeks, I am looking to remedy that. We start with a song about the woman at a Nashville bank who was trying to take care of Dolly Parton's husband while she was on the road. As the story goes, Jolene (probably not her real name) the bank clerk knew damn well the song was about her, and yeah, there was a catfight.
Dolly kept her man. And also had a huge hit single that branched her into both pop music and the UK pop charts.
As an added bonus, here's a live duet version of the song that Dolly did with her goddaughter.
Did I mention her goddaughter happens to be Miley Cyrus? (If you read Totally Covered, you already knew that, and that Miley does a pretty damn good version of the song herself)

I have to be honest. I like myself a little less for liking this song.
But I think that's the point. It's somewhat narcisistic..... but, most likely, M-Train was going for positive image. Which makes it ironic that the original video for this song was Photoshopped to make her look thinner. Ridiculously, by the way.
It's a pretty simply constructed song, really. And still, it's got a nice beat. So I will appreciate it.

With her new album out, I've been on a Sia kick lately. And for the big hit that this song was, it was completely underappreciated, even by me. So I decided to give it a second look.
And you know what? It's full of raw emotion, like a lot of her music. It's smart and full of interesting metaphor, like a lot of her music. And she's got a huge voice to carry the song, like all of her music.

I have to open up with this: I have serious misgivings about this post.
SERIOUS.
This is a sharp departure from any of her previous work. In fact, I absolutely hated this..... until I went back and listened to the Icona Pop theft, and realized that, although this is far MORE heavy electronica than we've heard, it's still Charli. And it's still good to see her making more music.

30 August 2016 - Troye Sivan (ft. Alessia Cara, and not) - Wild
I first heard this song when Troye Sivan released it as a solo song last year. I didn't post it then, because while it was interesting, it didn't quite reach the heights I needed it to for inclusion here.
Adding Alessia Cara, on the other hand, and making it a duet... that made it a whole new song, and I love it. I hope you do as well.

29 August 2016 - Madonna - Don't Tell Me
This seems like a very Libertarian song.
Don't tell me what to do.
This is probably my favorite Madonna song.... but not because of this version. I mean, this version is fantastic. There's no doubt about it. It's nice to see Madonna discover a little bit of Nashville sound and mix it seamlessly with her own. And what a mix it is!!!!!
No, it's because of this version. Where the quintessential dance artist of her generation PLAYS HER OWN GUITAR. Because it was important to her. Fantastic!

26 August 2016 - Tove Lo - Cool Girl
EASILY the most anticipated song by me so far this year. I've been waiting for this for a very long time.
And the words at the end of this video gives me hope for a album deserving to follow the modern classic Queen of the Clouds, which to follow in October, when Lady Wood is released.
Ultimately, the song is the same catchy dance-pop with lyrical depth that Tove Lo does so damned well. And that's OK. That's what she SHOULD be doing. She's very good at it.
And yeah. It does look like she shaved her head for real.

Anyway, back to Kesha. I have not been this excited for a show in years. YEARS!!!!!! And I admit, as a 44-year-old man, I'm slightly embarrassed. But only slightly. I mean, you're smiling just listening to this song, aren't you? I'm smiling writing this post. How can you not????
And if you are in Central New York, come to the New York State Fair. It's $3 today, and it comes with a Kesha concert!

24 August 2016 - Pistol Annies - Hell On Heels
THIS is the textbook definition of a long overdue post.
We really should feature Angaleena Presley's solo work at some point - she's the sublime singer that goes first in this song. Anyone who can hold her own on a stage with the huge voices of Miranda Lambert, who I will not talk about any more in this post because everyone just gave her credit for this being HER side project despite the two other tremendously talented women who were with her on this record, and the woefully underappreciated Ashley Monroe (who WILL get some play on here) deserves some spotlight.
But rather than complain about what I should and should not post, why not enjoy this fantastic song by three immensely talented women?! That's what I'm going to do.

It was only a matter of time, people.
This is an intensely danceable song, and it's got a catchy chorus. How Justin Timberlake has kept his energy so high for so many years, while allowing his music to both mature and still be fun, is a mystery for the ages.
Also, smart move on the part of the makers of the movie Trolls, out later this year and from which this song is, to release this song in the summer. All they're doing is kicking off their buzz early.

By the end of this post, no matter what your political leaning, you will love Regina Spektor.
I wanted to post this for the very cool looking video. And it is cool. Watch it. It was her very first video.
But then listen.
Strings and piano. And Regina Spektor's voice. And very deep, meaningful lyrics that you won't hear from any other songwriter. "The sculptor's marble sends regards." It's a cool song, full of deep meaning. And her delivery is so genuine and heartfelt.
But now watch it live. EVEN MORE IMPRESSIVE. That's just whatever piano Barnes and Noble had lying around. And she's cramming a lot of piano notes in along with those very complex lyrics.
But what about something more impressive?
How about at the White House, in front of the President and Vice President, without the strings, and she screws up because even SHE gets nervous!!??? And recovers BEAUTIFULLY, in a self-effacing way. How awesome and genuine is that?!
And now you love her.

Let me put this right out there. Art Alexakis wrote a brilliant song here.
The song starts off kind of quiet, but grows angrier as it continues. Even in its anger, this three-minute masterpiece still stays controlled, and, dare I say, fun. But back to that buildup. The band is a three-piece. They get a lot of sound out of that three-piece.
But that's not why I think it's brilliant.
The lyrics are powerful and heartfelt and angry and poignant and eloquent. And, for a three-minute song, there are a lot of lyrics.
But that's not why I think it's brilliant.
It's all of it together. And even more than twenty years later, this is a song that sticks with me. It's a song I enjoy more with every listen. Which isn't something I would have thought in the mid 90's. It's a surprising piece of genius.

I didn't like this song at first.
In fact, I found it insufferable.
I no longer feel that way. When it gets to the chorus, it really picks up steam and feels like a throwback to an earlier time. And not just because the song itself is about being a throwback.
At any rate, I felt that it warranted sharing. So enjoy it.

I see that your little band did some one-off shows in 2014 and 2015. I even saw some video from those shows. You've lost nothing - none of your zip, none of your talent, none of your excitement. I thoroughly enjoyed every song
I had, of course, hoped that you would all see my posts, and see that I was trying to rally support for an international holiday commemorating your band's three fantastic albums. I wasn't really ALL that hopeful that I would be successful. But my posts have been popular. You still have fans - fans who miss you. You proved that you still have the talent you always did.
So, please. Don't make this one-off. Make this a permanent reformation. You won't be sorry. We will keep Darling Buds Day going.

My assertion is that Tinashe is the future of R&B. She's got the right attitude for it, she's got a great voice for it, and she's got the perfect mind to craft a solid classic song.
Take this one. Her performance in this song and video (mostly the backlighting) has been compared to the great Aaliyah. At such a young age, she has perfectly captured a song that will stay with you for years. More impressive, it's a song that would live just fine a capella - the musical backing is sparse at best, and yet the song appears deep on the strength of her vocal.

Do you know how hard it is not to type "feat. Charli XCX" on this?
You aren't imagining things. That's her, on the chorus, uncredited. It's obvious. Some critics have even been critical of it, calling it a Sucker outtake (which may or may not be true).
It's also the rawest song Selena Gomez has ever sung, and it shows real musical maturity. I, for one, am proud of her growth as an artist. The song, as performed, isn't catchy because some hip songwriting Brit decided to allow her backing vocal to remain on the final cut. It's catchy because it's expertly delivered by Selena Gomez.

I assume that, if you are reading this, you are probably not a first-time reader of this blog. If you are, catch up. I'll wait.
Now that you are a long-time reader, you cannot be possibly surprised I am going to like a throw-back, big-female-vocal, straight-ahead pop song like this. I'm not saying I like every huge female vocal ever, but Elle King just looks like she's having so much fun with this.
Let's not even get into the fact that she's Rob Schneider's daughter (her mother is model London King). I could go on for days on that one.
I'd like to add that I am very happy to see a young singer/songwriter who is getting heavy pop radio rotation not afraid to play a guitar. We need to see more of that!
But what I really made you scroll down for was to see her play a banjo. And also to see that she's been around awhile. Overnight sensations don't always happen overnight. And yes, this song feels a lot more country (the banjo might have something to do with that), but that's part of the appeal of Elle King - she's a versatile artist with a depth of influence.

I couldn't NOT pay tribute to the great David Bowie. And, normally, I would have called for a guilt-free edition, but by not doing so, I can share with you....
This is the first David Bowie song I remember hearing. The original video and song use imagery that is of another time period. There's no doubt about that. And yet, it's still a deep, dark, and compelling song, just like everything else the man did in his career.
